Can We Balance Family and Youth Sports?
I saw an article at an "expert" site that I just could not believe. Let's blame over scheduled sports for what's wrong with our families. Yes, students have less and less free time between activities, homework, jobs and school. Is the answer to decrease dedication to youth sports? The world has changed... free time for children is not like it was for us. Children today spend their free time instant messaging, playing their Playstations, and watching Sponge Bob. They are not building forts with their friends, biking, or reading. But let's hear some of their suggestions: Balance sports and family life. As "soccer moms" isn't that our priority? Doesn't sports involve our family? But is sports what is taking all of our time - what about homework? (have you read The Homework Myth? Very enlightening!) Homework is a bigger threat to our children and their love of learning. Many sports occur while family members are working. I don't see the need for a trade-off. Find a balance between sports. Why? is rock climbing or rollerblading more of a lifelong sport? Aren't some sports better than others? Isn't there more value in team sports than individual activities? To be good at sports today children must specialize. I'd rather have my child be very good at a few things than mediocre at many. Balance sports and academics. No question that academics are more important. But schoolwork should be done in school, and teachers should be teaching. Parents should not have to pay for tutors or stay up every night to make sure their child can keep up with their academics. Yes, encourage your child to play, try hard in school, and have friends. But also encourage your child to find something to love and work hard at it. That will build more character than homework or ping-pong. Schedule regular family time and stick to it. Have a game night, movie night, and regular family meals. Turn off the television. There is balance (and value) in being the soccer mom. Discuss the topic of balance and this article on

Are you an unruly parent? Have you seen one? I don't want to see
parents screaming at the referees, coaches, or children.
